Editor and travel writer Laing's new book, subtitled On Writers and Drinking, takes two tracks simultaneously: It peers into the lives of six beloved, alcoholic, quintessentially American writers—including Hemingway and Fitzgerald—and it tries to make sense of Laing's childhood, which was affected by alcohol.
