Finally, there’s good news for single millennials! Recent data on the winners of New York’s many housing lotteries shows the demographics that receive the most of the affordable apartments, and the majority have gone to young single people.
Out of 1,470 units up for grabs from 2013 to 2015, 41 percent went to winners aged 25 to 34, and half were single. Since 898 of those apartments were one-bedrooms or studios, it does make sense that lonely singles won them. (Sorry, anyone in a happily committed relationship—sucks to be you!) There’s no data on the number of applicants, but studies have shown that most lotteries get about 850 applicants per unit.
May the odds be ever in your favor—if you’re young and single.
