Tracy Morgan returned to SNL last night, but Larry David stole the show

Last night, Tracy Morgan took the SNL stage for the first time since he was nearly killed in a car accident in the spring of 2014. His appearances felt slightly more heartwarming than humorous, but we were nonetheless thrilled to see him return. In his opening monologue (which included a surprise reunion with the 30 Rock cast), he expressed his joy to have come home to Studio 8H, and even joked about his accident. Check it out:

But anyone who was watching last night (or looking at Twitter) will probably agree that a different surprise made the episode truly exceptional, and totally overshadowed the Morgan reunion. Larry David returned to SNL (he was a writer there in the mid-80s) to play his political doppelgänger, Bernie Sanders—a casting choice so obvious and so perfect, it rivals Tina Fey as Sarah Palin.
