Over the course of just two weekends, Erez Avissar—who’s spent this decade snapping NYC’s ever-expanding underground for the likes of The New York Times, Pitchfork, Thump and Resident Advisor—hit the town to capture what it’s like to go out in NYC in 2017. The takeaway? It’s pretty damn fun. So cheer up, New York: The party’s not over. It’s business as usual at Holy Mountain, queer-nightlife staple Ladyfag’s new, hookup-heavy monthly takeover Slake’s massive club—in other words, it’s totally, wonderfully fucking bonkers.
Saturday at 11:39pm in Maspeth, Queens
Brooklyn dancehall label Mixpak Records makes a (small) leap to Queens for a backroom, bouncy affair at the expansive Knockdown Center. “It’s really important for black girls to support each other and to see that tonight,” says 24-year-old Karmenife, pictured immediately below. “I’m a pansexual queer black woman. I love who I love, and who I love loves me.”
Sunday at 2:30am in Williamsburg, Brooklyn
A trio of DJs known for frenetic 160bpm sets—Orange Julius, Paypal and Mastercard—brings an eager crowd to East Williamsburg space Sunnyvale, a venue often associated with rock bands.
Saturday at 11:58pm in Bushwick, Brooklyn
Mermaid Parade afterparty, appropriately named Under the Sea, draws Coney Island kids to Bushwick’s Rubulad, for a late-night dance-athon. When asked if he has anything to explain his attire—or rather, lack thereof—27-year-old Mike, pictured immediately below, replies, “Nothing!”
Sunday at 1am in Bushwick, Brooklyn
A hush-hush house party in the far reaches on Bushwick attracts throngs of early twentysomethings with its lax smoking and budget-friendly BYBOB policy. “I think I hear rats crying,” says Andrea, 24, pictured below mid hula-hoop.
Saturday at 1:13am in Ridgewood, Queens
“It’s hotter than hell but no one’s leaving!” exclaims Willy, 23, pictured immediately below. Queer community space the Dreamhouse holds an outrageous (and yes, outrageously hot) Pride Weekend version of its till-6am rager dubbed Ova the Rainbow. “I feel as if I've found a home in this small utopia,” adds Hannah, 25, pictured second below. “It’s free from judgment, [a place] where creativity reigns and you never know who or what you may experience,”
