RECOMMENDED: Free things to do in NYC guide
“The Art of Watches” Cipriani Le Specialità; Thu 13–Jul 23 at various times; free
Swiss watch manufacturer Patek Philippe hosts this exhibition, which honors haute horlogerie, the high art of making watches. Wander through 10 rooms of historical and aesthetically significant pieces, to check out wrist- and pocket watches that date back to 1530, along with a clock from John F. Kennedy’s collection.
Dirty Thursday: ’90s Night House of Yes; Thu 13 at 10pm; free
Travel back in time, get into the groove, and lose your voice belting out legendary jams like Salt-n-Pepa's "None of Your Business" at this outrageous Bushwick dance party. Wear neon-splattered denims, oversized flanels or patent leather bodysuits to win free drinks and eternal dance-floor glory (or, if you win over the bartenders, that tends to work, too). Spandex is sweat-proof, right?
Freddy’s Bar Doggy Fashion Show Freddy’s Bar; Sat 15 at 5:30pm; free
All the most fashion-forward pups strut their stuff on the red carpet at this annual competition and street party. In addition to the cat—ahem, dog—walk, the event features bites, beer specials and jokes by the event’s MCs Courtney Maginnis and Jim Search. May the best pooch win!
City of Water Day at various locations; Sat 15 at 10am; free
Anyone who’s spent time in landlocked parts of the country will tell you that a city without water is like, er, a city without water. The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance celebrates NYC’s best accessory at Governors Island (and other locations, too!), offering activities that remind us just how good we have it. Get gratis access to a plethora of water-going vessels, including canoes, kayaks and rowboats; or fish, bike or kick back with food and music on dry land. Locations vary; visit cityofwaterday.org for details.
The Rubin Block Party The Rubin Museum of Art; Sun 16 at 1pm; free
The Rubin shuts down the block for this cheerful “Sounds of the Street” edition of its annual street bash. Enjoy aurally mesmerizing performances by the Brooklyn Express Drumline, the Bhakti Center and more; check out poetry and language workshops; and experience sound-based meditation during free museum tours.
