By now you've probably heard of Bronies, or adult male fans of the cartoon show "My Little Pony." Love 'em or hate 'em, they're on their way to Brooklyn for the 3rd annual Ponycon.
This year's event, which has previously been held in Manhattan, will take place on Feb 14–16 at St. Francis College in Brooklyn Heights. Just imagine all those bearded bros sporting rainbow-colored hoodies with bright pink manes attached to them. Pony-lovers can take part in tea parties, dress-up events, arts, crafts and games at the convention—events include a “Dennybutt Livedraw,” “Uncle Yo’s Stand Up,” and even “Pony Plushie Making.” Tickets are as low as $35 and as much as $1000 for celestial level VIP admission that includes a "Hearts and Hooves" dinner for two at a 4-star restaurant plus special seatings and tons of pony swag.
Of course not everyone going to Ponycon will be a grown man, but there's sure to be a lot of them. Men across the country find solace in the series (it's not just well written, but artistic too!). In 2012, the documentary “Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony” revealed the personal stories of some twenty-something men who said the fandom offered them friendships they had never experienced before.
Just keep this in mind as an alternate way to spend your Valentine's Day, singles of New York.
