The long-struggling St. Mark’s Bookshop in the East Village appears to finally be entering its final days.
In fact, the well-known book purveyor could close as early as the end of the week, according to Bedford and Bowery. The local bookstore has been fighting eviction for months after facing $62,000 in back rent, $34,400 in unpaid taxes and $16,000 owed to a major book distributor. Owners Bob Contant and Terry McGoy were served a Marshal's Notice last week.
The shop is currently having a Clearance Sale in a last-ditch effort to raise funds. It announced on its Facebook page last week that everything in the store is now 50% off and cash-only.
Their hours today are noon to 10pm.
