We know, summer vacation just started, but bring your brain back to school for a sec.

Earlier this year, New York became the first state in the country to offer free college tuition, and applications just opened on Friday. Resident New York students can now apply for the new Excelsior Scholarship, for use at two- or four-year colleges in the state. To be eligible, the student's family must make less than $100,000 a year (and that cap will be increased to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019).

Recipients of the award will receive tuition up to $6,470 for the 2017-2018 academic year. To keep the scholarship, New York college students must also take at least 30 credits a year and maintain a certain GPA standard. The scholarship is yet another step toward making New York City more affordable for lower-income residents, just like those affordable housing lotteries we know and love.

Students pursuing a second bachelor’s degree are not eligible, nor are part-time students. The deadline is July 21, and you can apply for it here.
