Quick: What’s New York’s most crowded borough?
If you said Manhattan then, surprisingly enough, you’re wrong. When you take a look at the most crowded households across all five boroughs, it turns out that the most-packed areas are actually in the South Bronx, Central Queens and South Brooklyn.
In this case, “crowded” isn’t referring to the platforms of local subway stations at rush hour. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, households are considered crowded when there is more than one person per room. So a couple living in a studio is considered crowded (such couples most likely agree) while the same couple living in a one-bedroom is not (these couples probably beg to differ.)
Using that definition, a new study from StreetEasy reveals that the neighborhoods with the highest percentage of crowded households are primarily located in Queens. The neighborhoods of Corona, North Corona, East Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Belmont are all among the top ten crowded neighborhoods in the city.
