There’s no shortage of great beaches near NYC. Look no further than Staten Island’s South Beach, a tranquil spot where you can cruise a business-filled Boardwalk and even Instagram some sea life. Follow our step-by-step guide to the sandy destination for one killer summer day.

11am
Set up a beach blanket by Parking Lot #1 near Kayak Staten Island and chill for a spell before checking out some of the wildlife. (Yup, here you can get up close and personal with horseshoe crabs, who harvest eggs on the beach during the beginning of each summer.)

1pm
It’s high time to hit the seas. Wait in line for a free boat ride—kayak, life vest and paddles included—and navigate the waters like a pro.

2:30pm
Afterwards, put your new sea legs to good use by renting a bike at Wheel Fun Rentals (300 Father Capodanno Blvd; 347-996-0378), and pedal along the nearly two-mile boardwalk.

3:15pm
Be sure to stop at Ocean Breeze Fishing Pier; at 835 feet long, it’s one of the city’s premier angling spots.

3:30pm
There’s no need to fish—you can still enjoy music and dancing on the pier, especially on the weekend of July 22 and 23, when Back to the Beach, the borough’s biggest festival, takes over.
