A new hospital-themed bar in the East Village is serving shots in syringes

A century ago, alcohol was considered medicine—at Sanatorium, his new Alphabet City cocktail lounge, Apotheke creator Albert Trummer is aiming to reclaim the curative properties of booze. The pharmaceutical-themed den is inspired by 1930s medicine hospitals: Plush couches and crystal chandeliers are offset by splashes of stainless steel, surgical equipment and a light box displaying X-ray sheets.

The cocktail menu dutifully sticks to the theme, with drinks like In the Ambulance (gin, rosemary, orange and sugarcane infused with thyme) and No Insurance (vodka, Earl Grey, raspberry and house hibiscus “elixir”) poured from apothecary bottles. Those tipples are made on an operating table–turned–main bar and shots are served in syringes. Get an eyeful of the space and drinks below.
