Union Square will be appearing a little more, well, crystalline over the next year thanks to Dale Chihuly and his outdoor art project, Rose Crystal Tower. Chihuly has created numerous artworks for public spaces all over the world, and though they’re renowned for being made of glass, his latest is actually created out of plastic—or more precisely, a proprietary transparent material the artist calls Polyvitro. For Rose Crystal Tower, the stuff has been cast into individual chunks assembled into a 31-foot-high vertical structure colored pink. Certainly more permanent than some previous sculptures at Union Square, Chihuly’s piece will be standing tall over nearby restaurants, shops and farmer’s market—ready and waiting for your Instagram account—starting Oct 6.
