Mommy opens in theaters
Writer-director Xavier Dolan is only 25, but he's already made a handful of features. His latest, about a tricky estrangement between a mother and son, is excellent.

Beasts of the Southern Wild Live; BAM Peter Jay Sharp Building, Fort Greene, 8pm. $25–$65.
The Wordless Music Orchestra and Grammy-nominated cajun band, Lost Bayou Ramblers (who are actually featured on the film's soundtrack!), perform live to the picturesque film. We expect to be in awe the entire time. Like, in total awe, man.

The Not-So-Late-Show: An Evening with Cheyenne Jackson; New World Stages, Hell's Kitchen, 11:30pm. Free.
A talented man who genuinely looks like he belongs in a Disney fairy tale serenades you at this (not so) late night affair.

Lavell Crawford; Carolines on Broadway, Midtown West,  7:30pm and 10pm. $42.
Not familiar with the name? It’s Huell from Breaking Bad! Doing stand-up! Yeah, thought that’d get your attention.

Winter Antiques Show; Park Avenue Armory, Upper East Side, 12pm. $25.
This is the 61st year for this prestigious show, featuring items from ancient Roman times all the way through mod-looking 1960s items. We can't afford much of it, but it's fun to look at.

Trevor Noah; Gotham Comedy Club, Chelsea, 8pm. $28, VIP $120.
The charming but razor-sharp South African comic returns to NYC as part of his inevitable comedy domination of Earth.

Louis C.K.; Madison Square Garden, Midtown West, 8pm. $25—$65.
Louis C.K. is a funny man. But not only is he a funny man, he's a Grammy and Emmy award winner, and his critically acclaimed show Louie is comedic gold. Gold, we tell you! So in other words, you need to go to his show.

Winter JamNaumburg Bandshell, Central Park, 11am. Free.
It's easy to forget how awesome NYC in winter can actually be. Head to this (artificial) snowy wonderland in Central Park to snowboard, ski and do all those icy-fun things the season brings.

Irish Arts Festival; Children Museum of the Arts, Soho, 3:30pm. $10.
The culture of the Emerald Isles lives today with mythical storytelling, animations and jig lessons. Seriously, real jig lessons for you and your friends.

Beer, Bourbon and BBQ Festival; The Tunnel, Chelsea, 12pm. $99, $199.
Massive amounts of barbecue, bourbon and bluegrass tunes make this all-you-can-eat-and-drink fest feel more like a Southern summer afternoon than a brutal East Coast winter day.

The Big Cheesy; Openhouse Gallery, Nolita, 11am. $30.
The only thing better than a good grilled cheese sandwich is six artisan grilled cheese sandwiches paired with a local NYC brew, which is precisely what you'll get at Openhouse Gallery's The Big Cheesy.

Jan 25

World B-Boy Battle; Queens Theatre, Jackson Heights, 2pm. $20–$95.
The fate of the top 16 best B-boys from around the country lies in the hands of three judges, and with veterans running the show we know this hip-hop competition will keep it 100.

Round-Up; BAM Harvey Theatre, Fort Greene, 7:30pm. $30–$65.
Singer and songwriter Sufjan Stevens illustrates evocation of the rodeo as part of BAM's Next Wave Festival. Saddle up and ride in! Or just take the subway, which would probably make more sense.

They Might be Giants; Music Hall of Williamsburg, 7pm. $40.
The eclectic band begins a hearty run at Music Hall of Williamsburg in which it'll devote each monthly performance to one of its classic releases.

The Poetry Brothel; The Back Room, Lower East Side, 8pm. $30, VIP $75.
This is personal, guys. Here, “whores” of all genders recite their most private poetry behind closed curtains, along with music provided by Hot Club of Flatbush and burlesque act, courtesy of Foxx Von Tempt and Rosabelle Selavy. Steamy.

Honeymoon in Vegas opens on Broadway
Honeymoon in Vegas brings a whole bunch of singing Elvis impersonators to the Great White Way. Tony Danza also gets to show off his song-and-dance chops (give a whole new meaning to "Hold me closer Tony Danza."

A Brief History of Beer; Under St. Marks, East Village, 7:30pm. $18.
Some of us could talk for days about our favorite beverage, but this interactive play gives you an elaborate scope on brews in just hours.
