Metal-detecting wands, purse search, cover charge, endless lines for the $3 coat check…the masses on the dance floor are the final tip-off that this place is more club than restaurant. LQ stands for Latin Quarter. Why then, was the mojito a salty, mintless muddle? Chef Rodney Mitchell, who did a good turn at Calle Ocho, became sadly unfocused with ill-conceived Latin-Asian pairings like leaden spring rolls stuffed with oxtail and lobster, and salmon teriyaki with dry, flavorless rice croquettes. Though some dishes satisfy, like a heap of tender braised short ribs, take the cue from the ambience: Dance, dance, dance—and eat elsewhere.
