Good luck finding this single-malt Scotch haven—there’s no awning and no sign. Ring a bell, wait for the buzzer, climb the stairs and…you’re in a windowless room filled with golf paraphernalia, light jazz and more than 300 rare bottles. Owner Koichi Hiraiwa largely caters to Japanese businessmen, which makes sense when you see the price list: $16 to $800 (for Black Bowmore) per shot. Jackets are required (the sign says so) and Hiraiwa has been known to charge a cover. Get on his good side, however, and he might share some delicious Japanese food (small plates that normally go for $10), or even crack open a special bottle.
