Time Out says

Just opposite Columbus Circle, this one of the busiest entrances to Central Park. The gate supports the enormous Maine Monument, which commemorates the sinking of the battleship Maine in 1898. Just past the gates you'll find a food kiosk offering Italian treats from Ferrara.
