Although Leonard has made forays into sculpture, she is known first and foremost as a photographer who followed a post-Pictures Generation approach that discarded appropriation and nods to pop culture in favor of re-engaging the photographic traditions of Eugène Atget and Walker Evans. Like them, her images are often filtered through a nostalgia for the past, even while they offer a postmodern take on such themes as gender, identity, sexuality, memory and mourning. This show, her fist comprehensive museum survey, lays it all out for viewers to contemplate.
