World War I, the Great Depression, the rise of Hitler and another world war that left Europe in ruins were all events that transpired in years—1900 to 1945—covered in this survey of self-portraits by 30 Austrian and German painters, and its easy to see the effects of catastrophe reflected in the artist’s faces. The show includes famous names (Egon Schiele, Max Beckman) and those not as well known (Georg Scholz, Felix Nussbaum), but all of their works evince the power of self-portraiture as a form of introspection made outwardly visible through paint.
