26-year-old Aaron Fowler only moved into his East Harlem studio three months ago, but his works already reflect his time here. The St. Louis–born artist, who studied at Philadelphia’s Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before getting his MFA from Yale, came to NYC when a friend’s recommendation got him an exhibition at the Harlem Fine Arts Show. A couple who saw—and loved—his work ended up becoming his landlords, providing him with a raw basement space as a studio. The result was Fowler’s new body of work, Pilgrimage, which comprises a series of physical paintings about him finding his way through New York.
