In the early 1970s, when she was a grad student at CalArts in Valencia, California, Mira Schor participated in a pioneering program started by Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro to further Feminist Art. (Schor has since established herself as a veteran of the genre.) The lusciously painted gouaches on paper in this exhibit were produced during that period, and for the most, meditate on the thorny issue of gender roles through dreamlike scenes playing out in a landscapes of palm trees and succulents. Unseen since they were originally made, these works offer a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s thinking and the milieu she inhabited nearly a half-century ago.
