The work of this venerable Chicago painter now in her eighties is exemplary of the city’s love for grotesque Expressionistic figuration and funky imagism. Working gesturally on top of found paintings, Bergman allows portions of the original content to show through, creating a disruptive effect that suggests a surreal marriage of thrift-store art and Willem De Kooning. This exhibit featuring female portrait heads offers excellent examples of her unique style.
