Jutta Koether, "Champrovent"

This native of Cologne, Germany, who's called New York home for decades, wears many hats (performance artist, writer). But she's known primarily for paintings that channel punk aesthetics and art-historical references into a gestural figurative style recalling ’80s Neo-Expressionism, only her work is not self-important. The results are always lively, as evidenced by her latest show, whose title is taken from the name of the village in Southern France where the famed artist Balthus sat out World War II.
