Joyce Pensato, "Batman Returns"

To say Pensato, a painter whose career stretches back decades, combines Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art doesn't quite do justice to the results: Her close-ups of cartoon characters like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Homer Simpson, rendered in a nervous, whiplash line, are arguably sui generis. Her latest canvases welcome back a character—Batman—who hasn't haunted her work since the 1990s, and for the first time include colors beyond her usual palette of black, white and silver.
