John Beech, "The State of Things"

Beech is big on making his work industrial-strength, as evidenced by these minimalistic pieces that make vague allusions to factories, warehouses, Dumpsters and freight-hauling trucks. Large-format black-and-white photos of the same are obscured by skeins of silver tape; boxes and platforms are put up on casters. It all adds up to a sense of toughness without veering into macho overkill.
