Although not well-known to American viewers, Uecker was part of the influential ZERO group of artists, whose repudiation of pictorial content and Expressionism in the late 1950s and early 1960s anticipated some aspects of later ’60s Minimalism. Uecker himself is perhaps best known for his dense Op Art–like compositions of the time, created by hammering hundreds of nails into wooden panels that were then hung like canvases. He accorded the same treatment to found objects like tables and chairs. This show rounds up pieces dating form the 1950s to the 1970s: Uecker avant-garde prime.
