In 1971 and 1972, Hisachika Takahashi, a Japanese artist living in New York, asked 22 of his fellow artists (Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and James Rosenquist among them) to each draw or paint a map of the United States entirely from memory, using the handmade Japanese paper he provided. More than 40 years later, the results are on view here.
