This exhibition brings together two important figures from Japan’s postwar art scene. Shiraga (1924–2008) a member of the avant-garde Gutai movement, was known for creating action paintings by hanging from a rope, and using his feet instead of conventional brushes to apply pigment. A generation removed, ceramic sculptor Hoshino overlapped with Shiraga’s career, though they never met. Still, the two shared a process-oriented expressionistic approach. Concurrent with this show is another at Mnuchin Gallery, featuring Shiraga’s major paintings dating from 1959 to his death.
