Time Out says

ArtWorks at the West Side Y is an excellent place for creative people of all backgrounds to come together and get inspired. They offer a wide range of classes in a variety of art forms, many of which are beginner-friendly. Anyone interested in pottery and ceramics can check out the Wheel: Beginner class, which covers basic glazing skills as well as throwing and molding clay on a potter’s wheel. Instructors will demo skills before letting students get to work on their own projects, offering frequent critiques and assistance along the way. More advanced students can enroll in the Zen of Pottery course, which combines more challenging pottery skills with an emphasis on the meditative nature of working with clay on the wheel. There are also plenty of courses that teach students how to hand-build objects with clay rather than working on a wheel.

ArtWorks also offers a handful of other creative classes, including a Drawing and Watercolor course that is geared toward beginners. This course, which provides all necessary supplies, teaches basic techniques through reproductions of still-life, art, and photos. There are also classes that teach students how to make beaded jewelry and stained glass, as well as writing classes for poetry and stage/screen.

Located directly across the street from Central Park, the West Side YMCA has been a beloved communal space in New York City for over 30 years. In addition to its robust curriculum of adult education classes, the West Side Y also offers a tremendous range of youth classes.  From acting and ballet to karate and hip-hop dance, creative young people can almost certainly find a course in something they’re passionate about.

People who have attended classes at ArtWorks have mostly positive things to say about their experiences. The instructors, in particular, are praised as being supportive, positive, and knowledgeable. Teachers reportedly do their best to provide individual attention to all students while maintaining a friendly and relaxed environment. Many people felt that they learned a lot in their classes and would attend additional courses at the Y in the future.
