Now that Broadway no longer benefits from Hairspray's retro uplift, there's room for another musical about the racial integration of a television dance program in the early years of the civil-rights movement. Joe DiPietro and David Bryan's score (which was nominated for a Tony Award) has its heart and soul music in the right place, and the production features a dynamic leading performance by Chad Kimball and a strong vocal one by Montego Glover.
