We were teary-eyed when Toys “R” Us, one of the most beloved toy stores in NYC, closed its doors in 2018. The thought of stuffed animals, dolls and the latest craze no longer being readily available for kids was tough to accept, even if online retailers were just a click away. Fortunately, good news is on the horizon for the young and the young at heart.
You'll want to put a shopping spree on your list of things to do with kids! According to CNBC, Toys “R” Us is allegedly trying for a comeback, and yes, Geoffrey plans to be part of the excitement. CNBC further reports that former Toys “R” Us execs have been operating a similar company, Tru Kids, as of mid-January to manage Toys “R” Us, Babies “R” Us and Geoffrey brands.
“We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to write the next chapter of Toys”R”Us by launching a newly imagined omni channel retail experience for our beloved brands here in the U.S.," Richard Barry, president and CEO of Tru Kids, said in a statement. "We have an incredible team focused on bringing Toys”R”Us and Babies”R”Us back in a completely new and reimagined way, so the U.S. doesn’t have to go through another holiday without these beloved brands."
Allegedly, these execs are working toward a new business plan, which will potentially include Tru Kids stand-alone locations and pop-ups—hopefully in NYC! Obviously, we are more than ready for a peruse (or five) around the toy aisle! The head honchos of the toy company will focus on creating new business plans that will set it up for success, including digital plans, strong customer service and other amenities that were a struggle for Toys “R” Us.
Although these reports are still preliminary, we can't help but feel excited for the new merch that awaits. In the meantime, take a stroll through the newly-opened FAO Schwarz or visit an irresistible mom and pop, Mary Arnold Toys, NYC's oldest toy store!
