It goes without saying, but: What the F?
The 2020 Coney Island season is underway, as both Luna Park and Deno's Wonder Wheel Park are slated to reopen on April 4. However, the MTA's forthcoming plans for the F Train will slightly complicate the commute to our favorite kids' amusement parks.
The signal system on the Culver Line between Church Av and W 8th St in Coney Island needs to be repaired, which means that that service on the F line will be interrupted beginning this March. According to a press release from the MTA, there will not be any local or express F train service at the following stations for the majority of weekends beginning March 20:
- Church Ave (no southbound-only)
- Ditmas Ave
- 18th Ave
- Avenue I
- Bay Parkway
- Avenue N
- Avenue P
- Kings Highway
- Avenue U
- Avenue X
- Neptune Ave
- W 8th St
- Stillwell Ave
Unfortunately, this is expected to continue into late 2021. The good news? There will be bus options for those who are affected: The Culver Link F1 will make all local stops and The Culver Link F2 will run express from Memorial Day weekend until the weekend after Labor Day. Below is a schedule of weekends the F will run:
- Easter and Passover (April 10–13)
- July 4th Weekend (July 3–6)
- Select October weekends (From Oct 9–26)
- Thanksgiving Weekend (November 27–30)
- Weekend after Christmas (Dec 25–28)
While this might slightly put a damper on your list of things to do in spring with kids, the trek to Coney will still be well worth it: Luna Park is planning to debut new rides, hot dogs are waiting at Nathan's and it's not officially spring or summer without at least one ride on the Cyclone.
It might take a bit longer to get to the seaside nabe, but we'll be there!
