The moment has arrived: After two delayed starts, NYC schools are reopening for the 2020-2021 term.
The second of three reopening phases began today with elementary school students returning to buildings. Middle and high school students are expected back on Oct 1 while 3K, pre-K and District 75 schools returned on Sept 21. Originally, the city had eyed a Sept 10 start over the summer, which was widely disputed.
According to new data from the NYC DOE that was released on Sept 28, roughly 54 percent of students will be participating in a blended learning curriculum while 46 percent will be learning remotely. Families can opt in for remote learning at any time, though they are only able to switch to blended learning at several points throughout the year.
In order to keep schools open, the percentage of citywide positive tests must remain less than 3 percent (as compared to 5 percent for the rest of the state), according to thresholds the mayor released earlier this year. CNN reports that schools will begin mandatory monthly random testing in October.
