Update: A grading system for the 2020-2021 school year has been revealed

School is officially in session in New York City. However, much of the 2020-2021 term is still to be determined.

Although classes are underway, it's unclear how students' performance will be assessed. Parents can expect an answer within the coming weeks, according to a rep from NYC schools.

“We have been full steam ahead for a reopening that prioritizes health, safety and high-quality instruction for all students," Danielle Filson, deputy press secretary for the NYC DOE said in a statement. "Our citywide grading policy will be released soon, and in the meantime, schools are setting expectations for students, reviewing work and giving feedback about progress. As we did last year, we will support schools in adapting their policies to acknowledge the impact of remote learning and any overarching citywide changes."

This spring, schools were forced to implement a new grading policy—and even cancel Regents exams—while children were learning from home: K–5 elementary schools replaced traditional grades with one of two evaluations, "meets standards" or "needs improvement." Middle schools had one of three evaluations: "Meets standards," "needs improvement" or "course in progress." High schools administered traditional grades, and those students who did not meet the requirements were automatically enrolled in the necessary summer courses.

Regardless of how this will all play out, we suggest checking out the free virtual tutoring available from the NYPL—it's a game-changer for parents!
