Who lives in a pineapple under the sea (and soon at The Palace Theater)? None other than our favorite porous pal SpongeBob SquarePants! While we've been so excited about plenty of other great plays for kids, this one surely takes the cake.
Here's what we know. The cast will include Ethan Slater (as SpongeBob) Gavin Lee (as Squidward) Lilli Cooper (as Sandy Cheeks) and Danny Skinner (as Patrick)—with more announcements to come. It's also a musical (how could it not be?) and is directed by Tina Landau. As for the plot: SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom are in trouble, and "total annihilation" of their undersea world is imminent. Will a hero step up and save the day?
The Broadway show will include original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, They Might Be Giants, Cyndi Lauper, Lady Antebellum, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes and T.I., among others.
P.S. Prepare for humor that appeals to audiences of all ages. After all, the T.V. show has always been known for maintaining that tasteful balance between what's funny for kids and those more adult jokes that sail over their heads. See imagery from the stage production on Time Out New York's post here.
The show officially opens on Monday, December 4 (with previews beginning November 6) at The Palace Theater, 1564 Broadway - Broadway at 47th St. To learn more about the production, visit spongebobbroadway.com.
