As you may already know, the Citywide Ferry Service is about to launch in NYC (starting with Astoria, South Brooklyn and Rockaway) in 2017, bringing convenient NYC subway-and-bus–priced transit to folks in the five boroughs ($2.75). While we’re totally excited for anything that makes our daily commutes a little easier, we’re also pretty pumped to learn that 13 of the vessels set to run this summer will be named by NYC kids!

We’ve confirmed with a source in New York City Economic Development Corporation’s Public Affairs Department that several Second Grade classes around the city have been invited to propose fun names for the boats (with a reveal on the final names sometime around April). DNAinfo reports that two names in the running are “Friendship Express” and “Lunchbox”…we’ll just have to wait and see if those stick.

The Citywide Ferry Service project will be completed with the addition of Soundview and Lower East Side routes in 2018, which will make journeys between these spots a little more convenient.
