Tweeting cobras aside, the Bronx Zoo garners fans far and wide for a number of reasons—approximately 5,000 animals call the NYC wildlife park home. As they stroll through the 265-acre nature park, which we recently named one of our 50 best family attractions, New Yorkers may spot such exotic creatures as the fossa (a predatory, tree-climbing mammal) and snow leopards. More common favorites, including gorillas, also reside at the Bronx Zoo. Kids will likely want to ride the Bug Carousel (choose from 64 enormous, brightly painted insect replicas), pet llamas in the Children's Zoo and take the Wild Asia Monorail through exhibits that house the elephants and deer. Keep an eye out for the daily penguin and sea lion feedings, plus other seasonal activities like Boo at the Zoo and summer camps. Read through our guide to the Bronx Zoo and what to do with kids nearby, then head uptown for a family day trip!

Added to the Bronx Zoo’s Butterfly Garden in 2005, the trippy Bug Carousel will charm all but the most confirmed entomophobes. Your kid can cruise on any of the 64 enormous, brightly painted insect replicas—be it the green praying mantis, orange grasshopper or red ladybug. Touted as the very first "all-bug carousel" (and who are we to argue?), it is educational as well as entertaining. A vivid hand-painted mural on the ride’s perimeter depicts the transformation of caterpillars into butterflies.
Families can scout out such winged beauties as monarchs and julias while strolling through a greenhouse and a lush meadow planted with native New York blooms (think lilac and echinacea). After comparing bug life cycles and peeking into the Nursery to see zookeepers caring for butterflies, kids can stop by the Pollination Hall of Fame photo booth to transform themselves into bumblebees, midge flies or other buzzy critters.

The Bronx Zoo's three-acre kid-friendly zone invites junior explorers to learn about animal habitats and behaviors through sensory experiences. Tykes will burrow through a prairie dog town, leap like a lemur, zoom down a tree slide and feed goats, sheep and llamas in the petting zoo. On their way out, families can pose for a snapshot with an animal at the photo booth.
