This newly restored, 100-year-old merry-go-round has returned to Coney Island in the center of Steeplechase Plaza. The city purchased the carousel (which has kept the two L's from its original manufacturer's spelling) in 2005, preventing it from being dismantled and sold at an art auction. The 50 hand-carved horses--36 moving, 14 stationary--and two chariots (one of which is wheelchair accessible) spin within a large, brightly colored pavilion with doors that open straight onto the boardwalk.
