Wirtshaus an der Au, located in the charming Au district, is an excellent choice to experience timeless dishes in Munich. This traditional Bavarian restaurant is large yet homey, family-friendly, extremely popular with locals (do reserve if you want to get dinner on a weekend or holiday), and serves its duck with potato Knodel and a generous serving of gravy. If you’ve got a kid in tow, they will give them an apple to go at the end of the meal. Your servers will be wearing Bavarian tracht, or local costume, so your meal will come with a side glimpse of lederhosen and a lovely dirndl or two.
Time Out tip: If you have several people in your group and you’re not averse to a bit of attention from your fellow diners, order the dessert platter. It comes to your table set alight with sparklers while a waiter follows behind, ringing a gong!
