Is Montreal about to become the city that never sleeps?
Officials with the City of Montreal said earlier this year that there are plans in the works to create pockets of neighbourhood “nocturnal zones" across Montreal, in addition to having a designated 24-hour nightlife district.
The project was discussed during a city council meeting where measures for dealing with noise violations and bylaws were also addressed.
The City of Montreal also revealed that Montreal is exploring the creation of its first “24/7 nightlife neighbourhood”.
It’s no secret that Montreal has some of the best bars and nightlife in North America, with many of the hottest spots dotted across the island.
While the exact location of this all-nighter neighbourhood has not yet been revealed, it is speculated to be near the downtown core.
A new bylaw related to nightlife is anticipated to be introduced in 2024.
City Officials have stated that various measures have been tested over the past two years to enhance nightlife in the city while maintaining residents' quality of life.
Several bars and restaurants in Montreal have been permitted to serve alcohol all night as part of a pilot project, with some bars remaining open until 8 a.m.
The city also indicated that certain buildings or establishments might be allowed to operate around the clock, with adjustments to noise bylaws.
With a new urban beach and bathing area being planned between Griffintown and Pointe-Saint-Charles—and new nightlife plans potentially on the horizon, it’s no wonder Montreal ranked one of the best cities in the world for food in 2024, and 12th best city for culture on the planet.
