After the significant snowfall last week, a major storm climatologists have called a “weather bomb” (read: wind, rain and snow) is making its way to Montreal just in time for the holiday weekend.

What is a weather bomb?

A storm is considered a "bomb" when rapidly dropping pressure in the weather system creates a shift in storm systems.

What does this mean for Montreal?

Environment Canada has issued a severe weather alert in effect for southern Quebec, including Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, and the Châteauguay-La Prairie area.

A total of 15 to 30 cm of snow is expected from Thursday night to Friday morning. The snow is expected to change to rain Friday morning with a risk of freezing rain.

Travel is expected to be difficult (read: messy and dangerous) due to rapidly accumulating snow, so watch out for highways, roads, walkways and parking lots which may become challenging to navigate.

What do the next 24 hours in Montreal look like?

According to Environment Canada, the next 2 days look like this:

Thursday: Heavy snow at times with a risk of freezing rain overnight (snowfall 10 to 15 cm). Northeast winds 20 km/h gusting to 40 increasing to 40 gusting to 70 overnight.

Friday: Heavy snow changing to rain in the morning, with a risk of freezing rain early in the morning (snowfall 5 cm;  rainfall 15 to 25 mm). Wind northeast 40 km/h gusting to 70 and then becoming southwest 50km/h  gusting to 80 km/h in the afternoon. Local blowing snow and windy at night.

Whether you're wandering through a Christmas market, checking out the city's holiday lights (and light installations) or eating at one of the year's best restaurants, or best new restaurants, make sure you have the right gear.
