One of Time Out Market Montréal’s chefs will be appearing on the world’s biggest culinary stage.
Chef Chanthy Yen—the man at the helm of Time Out Market Montréal’s Chanthy Yen, the Michelin-recognized Bacaro in Vancouver, and former personal chef to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau—is adding Top Chef Canada to his star-studded resumé.
The first Queer and BIPOC chef to hold the position as personal Chef to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family, chef Chanthy Yen has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants in San Sebastian and Barcelona, Spain.
Honing his skills in his grandmother’s kitchen, chef Yen’s Cambodian cuisine has earned international recognition, including a Michelin Bib Gourmand award two years in a row.
As a competitor in Top Chef Canada Season 11, the chef—home to some of the best chefs and restaurants in the city under one roof—he’s ready to show his skills and cook his way to the top.
With a career that began in kitchens such as Spain’s Mugaritz and Ferran Adrià’s Bullipedia research centre, chef Chanthy Yen has romanced Montreal time and again with projects ranging from precise tasting menus to pop-ups that rediscover his Cambodian roots.
At his signature concept Chanthy Yen at Time Out Market Montréal, chef Yen invites us to taste how he sees, unravels, and respins the world through a menu of reimagined classics.
We’re talking about bao buns stuffed with spicy fried chicken and cheddar, caramelized pork belly or tempura fried mushrooms and piled with homemade aioli, kimchi, lettuce and marinated cucumber.
Imagine salmon tartare with capers, sesame, ginger and avocado aioli served with shrimp chips and taro chips, or beef tartare drizzled in truffle oil, miso, dijon mustard and parmesan served with fried chinese donut.
And don’t miss the pan-fried lobster dumplings with yuzu-avocado aioli, or the big mak spring rolls served with big mak sauce, marinated onion and lettuce.
Blending a studied mind with pure intuitive skill, chef Yen isn’t just a rising star of Canada’s restaurants—he’s now on the world stage.
When does Top Chef Canada Season 11 air?
Season 11 begins Monday, October 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Food Network Canada and streaming on STACKTV.
