Chef Marcus Samuelsson has serious love for Montreal.
Montreal is home to some of the best restaurants, secret bars and speakeasies, epic nightlife, architecture and things to do in Canada, so it’s easy to see why. The Ethiopian-born Swedish-American celebrity chef is known for his restaurants across the world, including one of Montreal’s best: Marcus, located in downtown’s Four Seasons Hotel Montreal.
The chef shares his top 5 favourite spots in Montreal with Time Out Montreal:
1. Café Got Soul
This spot in Little Burgundy is what happens when good coffee, music lovers, sneakers, streetwear and a DJ booth come together.
2. Le Bird Bar
Fried chicken and champagne lovers flock to this Griffintown gem, where all the sides are available—plus oysters, vegan popcorn chicken and wagyu pogos. Think Playboy Mansion vibes, and a downstairs speakeasy.
3. Boom J's Cuisine
This may be some of the best jerk chicken in town. Stew beef, oxtail and curry goat are also the name of the game here, with rice and peas, sweet plantains and Jamaican patties in the mix.
4. St-Viateur Bagel
Who can resist bagel artists who have been making hand-rolled, wood-fired bagels since 1957? Not Chef Marcus Sameulsson—nor Dua Lipa.
5. Montreal's landmarks
Walking around the city is one of the best ways to explore its rich art and architecture including the Leonard Cohen mural on Crescent Street and Habitat 67 in Old Montreal.
