January déjà vu?
A major snowstorm is making its way to Quebec (again!) and is expected to bring more than 20 cm of precipitation, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.
A severe weather alert has been issued, with heavy snow and severe wind warnings.
The alert is for the Châteauguay – La Prairie, Laval, Longueuil – Varennes and Montréal Island areas.
Starting on Wednesday, the heaviest snowfall is expected overnight and carrying into Thursday morning.
In the Eastern Townships, there is a risk the snow may change to rain Thursday morning with freezing rain during the transition.
While skiers and snowboarders rejoice, Southern Quebec should brace itself for a cold air trend—a polar vortex from Russia bringing colder air to Canada—as we move into February.
The good news? Montreal’s outdoor skating rinks could benefit from cooler temperatures, and cold weather attracts us to each other (cue the most romantic café and restaurants in town). Plus, there are plenty of incredible things to do in Montreal that don’t involve going outside. Not to mention the city's iconic comfort food and delicious cheap eats to keep us warm.
What is a polar vortex?
A polar vortex is a mass of cold air surrounding the Arctic that strengthens during the winter, bringing blasts of freezing air and rapidly changing temperatures with it.
When was the last polar vortex in Canada?
The most recent notable cold outbreak in Canada was in January, 2014.
There's no time like the present to take advantage of Montreal's best winter activities, and all of the indoor ways to enjoy the city snow, rain or shine—whether you're eating at one of the year's best restaurants (or best new restaurants), grabbing a cocktail (or mocktail) at one of the city's best bars or enjoying one of Montreal's many family-friendly activities.
