Food lover alert!

Anonymous MICHELIN inspectors are already in Montreal, making secret reservations and paying for all their meals to make sure they don’t tip anyone off.

Scouring the local food scene to find spots worthy of MICHELIN stars, MICHELIN Green Stars, MICHELIN recommendations, and Bib Gourmand Awards, the Canadian province becomes the 12th MICHELIN Guide destination in North America.

We have heavily speculated over what Montreal restaurants would receive MICHELIN stars should the guide—one of the highest culinary honours to be bestowed on a restaurant—come to the city.

We rounded up the city’s top-notch institutions and groundbreakers, from our most romantic restaurants to quintessential downtown eateries, that form the best of the best and make Montreal stand out as a cultural powerhouse.

Not to mention some of the best new spots to eat in the city.

It’s no wonder Montreal was recently ranked one of the top 20 food cities in the world.

“We are excited to plant our flag in Québec as the newest destination for the MICHELIN Guide in Canada,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guides.

“Québec’s culinary scene shines a light on the rich heritage and traditions of the province attracting travellers on the lookout for remarkable and tasty experiences. I look forward to revealing what my famously anonymous Inspectors discover for the inaugural selection.”

In a video posted to Instagram, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante and executive committee member Ericka Alneus announced that Montreal’s restaurants are set to receive recognition from Michelin Stars.

Mayor Plante also revealed that the entire Michelin Guide team will be travelling to Montreal and Quebec specifically to evaluate the finest restaurants.

How do you get a  MICHELIN star?

MICHELIN evaluates restaurants using the following criteria:

  • Quality of ingredients
  • Harmony of flavours
  • Mastery of cooking techniques
  • The chef's unique voice and personality in the cuisine
  • Consistency across multiple visits and throughout the menu (each restaurant undergoes several inspections annually)

When will MICHELIN announce its Quebec selections?

The first-ever MICHELIN Guide Québec selections are scheduled to be revealed in 2025, showcasing culinary spots from across the province.
