There’s a reason so many people choose urban life: cities offer world-class art and culture, incredible food and nightlife, vibrant neighborhoods, and endless opportunities for exploration.

Few places can rival the energy and excitement of city living.

Each year, Time Out dives into the nutty gritty of urban life by surveying thousands of locals around the globe about their experiences in their cities.

This year, over 18,500 residents shared their perspectives on everything from food and nightlife to culture, affordability, and overall quality of life.

Urban living can sometimes feel isolating or costly, so we wanted to uncover what truly makes a city feel like home. Beyond its nightlife, is the city safe and walkable? Can you find high-quality food and art at reasonable prices? Is it easy to make friends, find love, and connect with nature?

Livability was also at the forefront of our rankings. After all, a city that’s great to live in is also a fantastic place to visit. Alongside insights from locals, Time Out tapped into a global network of city experts to highlight the destinations that are especially exciting right now.

Combining all the data, Time Out’s definitive list of the best cities in the world for 2025 has been revealed, and Montreal made the coveted ranking.

Is Montreal one of the best cities in the world?

Montreal ranked number 44 on this sought-after list, thanks to all the incredible things to do—including being home to the second most beautiful café in Canada (possibly the most stunning on the planet), a new luxury supermall, a slew of award-winning hotels, a vibrant festival circuit, and a world-class food scene.

Despite its infamous construction cones, the city’s beauty—best seen from the mountain (and mountains in and outside the city) or a natural wine bar—continues to captivate.
