I ate at a pink and blue castle in Montreal that serves decadent sushi

This Japanese snack bar inside an iconic pastel castle also serves adorable mocktails, ice cream and more.

Torched sushi, fresh tartares and tasty cocktails in pig-shaped mugs?

This pink and blue castle located on the side of the 40 highway has it all and more.

Located in Villeray in the former Châteaubriand ice cream shop just a few minutes from Jarry Park, Château Maneki is the Japanese snack bar of our dreams.

Think Orange Julep vibes, but with a pink and blue castle—and sushi.

With Montreal's ever-expanding roster of sushi spots, make sure you put Château Maneki on your list.

What to try at Château Maneki?

Serving up oshizushi (pressed, flambéed sushi) that tastes as good as it looks, our favourites were the Maneki classic (salmon, japanese spicy mayo, jalapeno, orange tobiko and sesame) and the Chili crunch ebi (shrimp, crispy garlic and chili oil, sesame oil and lime zest).

Try one of two tartares, a choice of Korean Maguro (tuna, asian pear, soy, sesame oil, gochujang and green onion) or Classic Maneki (salmon, spicy mayonnaise, green onion, kabayaki sauce, tobiko and sesame) that come with a side of crackers.

Donburi bowls are also available.

A rainbow of delicious cocktails are on offer, including the Pink Potion (strawberry aloe vera, coconut syrup, strawberry grenadine, grapefruit juice and elderflower tonic), the Toad-ally Awesome (lime juice, pineapple juice, elderflower litchi syrup, aloe melon and 7-up) and the Mangue en Feu (jalapeno, lime juice, coconut syrup, mango puree and ginger beer).

Bonus: the cocktails also come in quirky ceramic frog or pig-shaped mugs.

The twist of vanilla and pineapple soft-serve ice cream, a nod to the castle’s past, disappeared in seconds.
