With the first solar eclipse of 2025 and the rare solar horns behind us, Montreal is ready for the next celestial phenomenon.

To catch the best view of this breathtaking spring moon, find an open spot and watch it rise above the horizon.

As it appears, the Moon will seem unusually large—a visual effect known as the Moon illusion—and will glow with a warm hue.

Why is it called ‘pink moon’?

The first full moon of spring is named for the blossom-like hues often seen during the season.

It’s called the Pink Moon in honour of Phlox subulata—a wildflower native to eastern North America also known as creeping phlox or moss phlox.

As noted by the Old Farmer’s Almanac, full moon names draw from a mix of Indigenous, colonial American, and European traditions.

What is a ‘micromoon’?

April’s full moon will be a micromoon, the opposite of a supermoon.

What is the best time to see the pink moon?

The full moon (Pink Moon) will occur on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 8:22 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
