As we grapple with train cancellations and delays due to the snow conditions this week, a new rail project has been officially confirmed.
This landmark project called Alto will cover approximately 1,000 km with stops in Toronto, Peterborough, Ottawa, Montreal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, and Quebec City.
The Cadence team was selected by the Government of Canada as the preferred private developer partner for the Alto rail project between Quebec City and Toronto.
While the project has been in development for some time, a six-year $3.9 billion design and development plan was announced this morning.
Passengers will be able to travel from Montreal to Toronto in three hours which is about half the time it takes to drive (and double the speed of a Via Rail train).
Is Canada getting a high-speed train?
Construction on the new rail line will not start until the design phase is completed, which could take up to 4 to 5 years.
What is the highest speed train?
The world records for top speeds are held by China's Shanghai Maglev Train at 431 km/h and the CR400 Fuxing Hao at 350 km/h for single-phase trains.
