Fresh off the news that Canada ranked number two on the list of best countries in the world, a new study has named Canada the safest.
Home to one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world, this news doesn't come as a complete surprise.
Averaging all measures from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s State of Travel Insurance research, the insurance company published a list of the safest countries for travellers for 2023-24.
Surveying 1,702 travellers and considering data from third-party sources, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection evaluated safety concerns including terrorism, health measures, weather emergencies and the safety of underrepresented groups.
The survey also included data from the Global Peace Index, the State Department’s travel safety ratings and GeoSure Global’s scores of the major cities in each country.
The scoring takes a number of factors into consideration, such as women’s safety, basic freedoms, theft, and health factors.
Is Canada the safest country in the world to live?
While Canada ranked to safest country in the world, the rankings do not serve as predictive indicators. In other words, stating that Canada is currently safe does not guarantee it will consistently rank in the Top 10 in the future. Furthermore, these rankings do not factor in the potential occurrence of natural disasters, such as the Canadian wildfires.

It's important to note that the safety designation does not imply that every part of the country is equally safe at this very moment. For instance, there may be variations in safety levels between urban areas like Toronto and regions in northern Quebec, where wildfires may be prevalent.
Similar to any other metric, it's essential to consider our rankings in conjunction with the global situation when planning your travels. Additionally, taking proactive measures to address travel safety concerns, such as enrolling in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program and securing travel insurance, is recommended to safeguard your investment.
