Spending time in one of Montreal’s beautiful libraries and bookstores is definitely one of the best things to do in town.
In addition to the gigantic skating rink in the heart of the city and the next-level light installations, spending a cozy afternoon in one of Montreal’s libraries is also one of the city’s greatest free pleasures—especially appreciated once winter rolls around.
The public library system in Montreal is extensive and impressive. And beyond the collections of books, some of the locations distinguish themselves through remarkable architecture and innovative programming.
And don't forget about the little extras, including drag queen Barbada de Barbades who has been reading stories to children in local libraries across the province for years.
Whether you’re looking for free programming for the whole family, or the latest bestseller, Montreal’s libraries are spaces for reading, researching, learning, playing, listening to lectures and viewing art, with many locations adjacent to some of the best parks in the city.
According to a report by the CBC, as of January 1, 2024, a new code of conduct in the boroughs of Ville-Marie, Anjou and Sud-Ouest will authorize libraries to eject or fine visitors with personal hygiene issues that inconvenience others.
The report states that fines starting at $350 and up to $1,000 can be issued for a first offence, and subsequent offences could go up to $3,000. Visitors will also be prevented from obstructing library doors, sleeping inside, threatening others and bringing in bedbugs.
